When Voldemort came to power, his Death Eaters were mainly composed of either old school “friends” or cowards who feared his persecution. Their group was controlled by a rigid fear of their master’s wrath. In other words, there was a minimal amount of true loyalty to their cause and love for their Leader. The one main exception to this is the Dark Lord’s strongest, most loyal, most trusted follower, Bellatrix Lestrange.

I get a lot of flack for admiring Bellatrix in some odd way. It’s almost as though this woman is too evil to deserve any sort of recognition. And of course, I will never defend her horrible crimes. She killed my favourite male character, Sirius, along with various other deeds of torture and murder. Like Harry said, she was “a witch with prodigious skill and no conscience.” But the fact that she was unhinged does not completely cancel out every other one of her character traits.

I’ve always had a weird reverence for powerful female villains, especially if they are magical, and even if they are diabolical. Perhaps that is what allows me to see past Bellatrix’s mania, and into her other qualities that many of you will surely disagree with.

But putting her cause aside, Bellatrix is crazy talented. You’ve got to admit that she has skills, and she is SMART. She saw past Snape’s two-faced disguise when no one else did, not even the Dark Lord himself. That is something. Now of course, her morals are not in the right place, and therefore her intelligence is not used for what we believe to be the greater good of our society, but she is undeniably an extremely valuable asset to her cause.

But what captured me the most about Bellatrix was her dignity and complete, persevering loyalty. When the Dark Lord fell, Death Eaters fled to the ministry for protection, renouncing their old ways and using gold and lies to buy back fake lives. Bellatrix however, took full responsibility for her actions, holding her head high at her trial like a queen. She gladly went to Azkaban and served her time and she was rewarded for it. Whatever else she was, Bella was never a liar. She was straightforward about her intentions, and proudly loyal to what she believed in and who she loved. She took the consequences for her actions and died bravely, having served her life fighting for what she wanted, with no regard to what others thought of her. Upon her death, even Voldemort suffered a blow, showing a rare moment of emotion for another being.

Bella is not someone children should look up to, and her cause and morals do overrule everything else in the end. But these qualities, in my opinion, put her one step above all the others.

Harry’s mind, leaden with exhaustion, could barely process anything. And yet, the searing pain of missing her still cut through his body as though he was being broken in two. This was not the same kind of pain and longing that he had felt while with the Dursleys at Privet Drive all those summers. This was not the way that he had missed Hogwarts, and Quidditch, and Ron and Hermione. This, he thought as his eyes hungrily followed the little black dot around the parchment, this was a whole new pain. He felt his entire being throbbing as the name on the map gleamed out at him, calling, reaching across miles and miles of distance.

Harry missed Ginny with a passion he had never known throughout his life. He missed her beautiful red hair, the twinkling dance of those brown eyes, and that hard blazing look she had worn the first time they had kissed. He missed her touch, her laugh, and the feel of her lips on his. He wondered if he would ever feel it again.

From inside the tent, Ron grunted in his sleep. Hermione stirred at the sound, curled up tight in her blankets on the bottom bunk. They were still not talking, despite Ron’s continued efforts to appease her. How lucky they were to be together at all.

Harry turned back to the map, back to Ginny’s dot which had been immobile for the past hour. She was in her dorm, safely asleep, he hoped. He sat there by the light of Hermione’s wand, staring at the name, and wondering whether the intensity with which he gazed at it might break into her sleep, that she would somehow know he was thinking about her, hoping that she was all right.

I feel as though so many people in our world today forget that the basis of love is choice. Love is not about what others deem to be a perfect fit, nor is it about who deserves whom. It is about who falls for whom, and their own personal reasons for wanting to be together.

It always frustrates and confuses me when I see people affirming that Harry and Hermione were meant to be together, and that they were the true perfect match. How can this be when neither have ever felt that way themselves? They can really love each other and care for each other all they want, but they can feel that way about many others as well. It is really impossible for outsiders to judge any relationship from a third person point of view, because there can be many crossovers between a close friendship and something more. I personally have always believed that good lovers must also be friends. However the thing that defines a romantic relationship and separates it from a platonic one is the feelings. In this case, Harry chose Ginny, and Hermione chose Ron.

I have often argued the many reasons why these two couples are perfect matches for each other, but really, all arguments aside, it just comes down to the fact that they each individually picked what they wanted. Choice is a very simple thing, and that is how love is supposed to be. People get so worked up over what is right and what is destined when really, it’s just a matter of what you want. Forget everything else.

Personally, I believe that JKR gave us a very clear idea of why Harry made the “right” decision in being Ginny, and same with Ron and Hermione, but I suppose some people might have missed that. However, for those who object, just keep in mind that “it is our choices that show who we truly are”.
